Music and meditation – why they go hand in hand.

Nothing brings me into the present moment more so than music. It’s the way I begin to connect to something greater than myself. Whatever the great mystery of life is, music and meditation are one and the same thing if we think in terms of energy, vibration and frequency. It’s the easiest way to focus my attention and as soon as I put on my favourite tracks, I can feel the stresses and strains of the day just beginning to melt away…

What's not to love?

The purpose of music in ritual and connection

For centuries, music has formed a significant role in forming a connection with the divine. Within the context of religious settings all over the world, music plays an important role when it comes to creating the atmosphere needed for prayer and devotion. It builds a bridge between the visible and invisible world where the state of consciousness can be elevated.

Take the Tallis Fantasia by Vaughan Williams for example, if you haven’t heard this piece, I would strongly recommend it. Between the soaring melodic lines and quite contemplative passages, the very structure of it feels like it has been created to reflect the inner like sanctuary of what it feels like to be in a cathedral. It is truly breathtaking to hear.

Creates an awareness of the present moment in a way that supports your emotional needs.

For mindfulness, listening to relaxing music can really help to induce feelings of calm and relaxation. I am very mood orientated when it comes to choosing the music I play so if I feel angry, I choose music that reflects those feelings. (Being pre-menstrual, sometimes listening to Nirvana, “Smells like Teen Spirit” is a good track to get out the angst!)

I believe when we do this, music has the power to reconcile our emotional difficulties. Rather than listening to music to calm us down when we feel angry or upset, listen to the music that helps you to feel what you’re feeling. After you’ve allowed yourself to feel it, then it is much easier to relax and decompress.

Music influences us on all levels of being

Listening to our favourite music can relax our mind and body and release dopamine which can also increase our feelings of happiness and general wellbeing. It can also help with the reduction of pain and it has also been used for individuals who are undergoing surgical procedures as it helps stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system (think of the brake being used to slow down a car that is accelerating quickly).

In conclusion – make time for music!

Music has the profound ability to affect us on many different levels. Making time to listen to your favourite songs can help improve the harmony of your physiological wellbeing. If you see your body, mind and spirit as an interconnected, intricate phenomenon, the music you listen to has the means of influencing how this organism functions.

The same way music is a combination of multiple different parts, (notes, keys, chords, etc.) the body is also exactly that – a composite of many different parts. When they all come together in harmony, that is where the magic is. Within the natural chaos of the world, there is an organisational symmetry beneath it all which reveals itself as a truth – if we only take the time to feel and hear it.
